Stretch Ceilings Installation

Stretch ceiling or decorative wall panels do not require extensive installation effort. The only preparation requirement for wood framed buildings is that walls, ceiling or roof, and electrical wiring have to be finished before installation starts. The ceiling or wall that will be behind the membrane do not need to be completely finished, but any further work on these surfaces will require the professional removal of the membrane, or the surface cannot be reached. Post-installation cleaning is not required, as stretch ceiling installation does not require adhesive materials, cement or paint. The process of installing the stretch ceiling products is streamlined and simple. The stretch ceiling membranes are usually extended by ~6% during the installation process. This guarantees that the membrane will remain flat and will not sag.

The installation requires some basic special equipment. This includes spatulas, clamps, an air heater, and enforcement rings.

Spatulas are used for attaching or detaching the stretch ceiling membrane to the track.

Supplementary tools and equipment are clamps and an air heater, which are used during the preparation of the installation, and translucent rings, which are used to reinforce stretch ceiling material around pipes or light fixtures. That's all you need.

The first step of the preparation is to mark off the track locations on the walls, in order to properly position the ceiling or wall membrane. The tools that are commonly used for this purpose are laser levels or even regular chalk. The marking-off must be done so that the mark forms a continuous line.

Second, the frames (tracks) for all internal and external corners of the stretch ceiling have to be attached. These tracks can be cut on the spot, but it is cleaner, faster, and more reliable to use tracks that are pre-cut by Laqfoil according to the room's layout, and shipped to the installer. All sharp edges must be hand-filed to prevent cuts or punctures to the membrane.

Third, the membrane has to be unpacked carefully, avoiding touching any dirty or unprotected floors, tools, etc. The membrane must stay clean all the time.

Fourth, the membrane has to be clamped at several strategic spots using special clamps. The idea is to establish a preliminary position for the membrane on the frame, before the final installation begins. In the case of rectilinear spaces, the membrane is first attached at the corners; with rounded shapes, we space the attachment points evenly. This step requires some experience and practice.

The final step in preparation is to bring the temperature in the room up to 40-450C (104-1100F). It is also recommended that any air draft in the room be eliminated during the process of installation by closing off all sources of cold air. Drafts and cold air flow can mechanically disturb the membrane, creating temperature irregularities across it. Such irregularities affect the membrane's properties, complicating the installation process. Installation may begin when the membrane is stable, flexible, and wrinkle-free.

The installation process consists of stretching and affixing the membrane to the installed frame (track). Installation requires some basic special tools, and some training and experience.

Installation starts with either corner of the stretch ceiling. In order to start installation the spatula is inserted into the harpoon which has been attached to the edges of the membrane, and hooking the assembly on to the track. After the corner is hooked up, the same procedure is repeated with the diagonally opposite corner, and so on until all corners are firmly attached. It is important to maintain balanced stretching of the membrane, in order to prevent the membrane from skewing at this early stage of installation.

Next, the points in between those already hooked into the tracks are hooked in too, spacing the work evenly until the entire membrane has been attached to the entire track.

During the entire process, installers keep one eye on the entire membrane so as to ensure that the installation is balanced and wrinkle free. Membrane that stretches around pipes needs to be reinforced. We accomplish this by using a translucent panel, usually acrylic. Light fixtures, air fans, or other objects that hang from the ceiling must have independent hanging mechanisms attached to the ceiling structure, so that they do not rely on the stretched ceiling for support. Stretch ceiling is an interior design element, and not a structural component. Normally, the entire installation process takes about two hours to be completed, and leaves no waste behind, providing that Laqfoil bespoke (to made to specification) tracks and membrane are used.
